Agreement encourages local sourcing for construction of coal export facility

LONGVIEW, Wash.- Millennium Bulk Terminals-Longview, LLC (Millennium) and the Longview/Kelso Building & Construction Trades have agreed to terms of a Project Labor Agreement (PLA) for the construction of the proposed coal export facility. By signing on to the PLA, Millennium furthers its commitment to create local, family-wage jobs for local workers.

"We are very pleased to have the skilled union workers of the Longview/Kelso Building & Construction Trades on board to build our coal export facility," said Ken Miller, Millennium's president and chief executive officer. "Millennium and the Building & Construction Trades share a strong safety culture and commitment to environmental stewardship and we look forward to partnering with them."

Construction of the proposed coal export facility is expected to support 1,350 direct jobs and $70 million in direct wages.  Indirect and induced impacts in the local, regional and state economies resulting from the construction of the export facility are estimated to be an additional1,300 jobs and $65 million in wages.

"This agreement goes well beyond jobs for our members; it is for the entire community," said Jeff Washburn president of the Longview/Kelso Building and Construction Trades Council. "With so much money injected into the local economy providing living wage jobs and preferences for local sourcing of materials, like tools, welding supplies, electrical and plumbing supplies, steel and concrete, Millennium will help to get our local economy back on track."

"Unlike some other large projects recently built in this area, Millennium is backing up their word in doing the right thing for the community," continued Washburn.

In addition to the Council, 13 individual trades unions have signed on to this agreement.

"Construction projects of this size and duration offer great opportunities for our Building Trades members in the community, and will create much needed entry level career opportunities throughout the trades apprenticeship programs," said Mike Bridges from the Longview Kelso Building Trades and business representative for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 48. "Our workforce, along with our industry partners, has a proven track record of completing these types of projects in the most efficient and safest manner possible."
